Jen: AK enters the Gas Chamber

Sorry for the lack of updates! We have plenty of news for you all. Let's start with some shit that's gonna blow your mind...

Past and present, AK have always prided ourselves in finding the most talented artists to lend their talents to our music. No doubt you've noticed the killer artwork in the background. It's from none other than k3n adams. K3n's distinctive work can be seen on skateboards, record label logos and all over throughout different industries. Most notably, K3n is the artist responsible for the artwork on all three Lamb of God albums and the trademark designs on all their merchandise. We are pleased to announce that k3n is working on a brand new AK design. That's right! The design will find it's way onto t-shirts as soon as it is completed. Stay tuned to see what his mind brings to Angerkill. You can visit his website and see his works at www.k3n.com.

Thanks to everyone who has donated to Eric's cause. We had hoped we would be a bit further along at this point, but you can NEVER complain when people are coming together for something like this. Our current total raised is $269.50. We will be having a benefit show (it's looking like December 8th) to raise more money for Eric's tombstone. For those that didn't know him.. Eric was a badass friend. He was someone who was easy to talk to and he had a sincere passion for his son, Xavier, and music. He was a HUGE Rage & Tool fanatic, but was open-minded and jammed to everything from Björk to Messhugah. He once broke his front tooth in our kitchen opening a Dos Equis. Dave dubbed him "Sweet Nips." (as part of Dave's lame-o posse. By the way, I am Jen... "chick on the side" a.k.a. "Cobra"). He was a cool dude to have around.. We spent many hours just sitting at the table, smokin and drawing, or just talking about music, movies or WHATEVER - there was never a shortage of things to talk about (of course, when one is high out of their minds, this happens). When we spoke, like all our close friends, we spoke from the heart. He had a KILLER voice - he wrote all the time and even performed with us here at the Rabbit and in Austin. He's not some guy that died that we're raising money for.. he was a friend and it pains us that it's almost been five years, and he still has that metal plate on his gravesite. If we had the money, we'd buy him a tombstone out of pocket.. but we obligations to our children, our households and this band, so here we are. He WILL have something though... if you have close friends, I'm sure you can understand where this is coming from. In many ways, this CD is bringing closure to this time period from this tragedy until now. We're all ready to move forward as a band. We'll NEVER forget them, but Dave, Frank and I are done being stuck. We're not just trying to raise this money for Eric, but we're doing this for ourselves and our friends still here. We've heard from so many of our buddies that they don't go to his site because it saddens them to see nothing there. Well, fuck that - no more.

On a lighter note, Dave goes in this upcoming week and the next week to get some more vocals done. We're hoping for three more dates in November but we're waiting to hear back from producer Monster Keith on that. After vocals are done, Erk goes in to lay down his shit. He's been writing some great stuff. Man.. I can rave all day about it, but you guys are just going to have to wait and hear his work for yourselves. Anyone who was at the Bonds show a couple of weeks ago knows what to expect!

This past week, we had a great practice. We started up again last week and had a pretty rusty practice with a record of 13 people show up to check it out. Man.. "sorry guys". We weren't sounding so hot, but that's what practice is for.. so this week, we jammed a couple of times again and by Wednesday, we were full force. Erk spit out some riffs and we actually started a new jam...WOW.. it was feeling nice too! But - "not yet....." and Erk got us back on the task at hand so it was put on the backburner. Keeping everyone focused in practice has been my role in this band for years so I am fucking thrilled to have someone helping me out there. When in practice, our soundguy Victor is also great at keeping us focused. I LOVE it. I'm saying it again right now.. ANGERKILL has NEVER been stronger and more united with such potential. Erk is experimental and open-minded WITH great chops! We've met our match, boys and girls. He's learned the set and is now working on integrating himself into the music through his solos and layers. We hear some of you guys out there passed him up prior to him joining AK. Suckas!!!

He also taught us about americanmusical.com. Both a good and bad thing... Dave and I have already started building the gear arsenal. Dave really has to strain in practice to hear himself because the kicks are running through his vocal equipment. We've picked up a brand new QSC power amp and now need a kick monitor so he can have his vocal monitors to himself and he won't be straining for volume. I bought a Samson Airline Bass Wireless -yeah!- so I can practice more than once a week without a babysitter (and it doesn't hurt that my uncoordinated self won't be tripping on my cable on stage). I can now be in the house in the same room as my babies and still get practice in. Eventually we'll get a wireless headphone system to have headphone monitors for me and would like a video feed (we have an extra camera and TV.. just got to figure that shit out), but for now, it's playing along to what I hear blasting through the walls. Currently I get to practice on Wednesdays and on practice days other than that, Dave will jam half the set and I'll go in the second half. From day one, nothing has ever been conventional about this band. Fuck it.. normalcy is in the eye of the critic. How you like dem beans?!

Jen, Dave, Frank: Attention! We need to find a kickass lead guitarist

As of recent, Jared Hernandez has amicably parted ways with AK. A multitude of reasons contributed to this decision on both ends. Its a sad time for all four of us, but we all know its best for Jared on an individual level and Angerkill as a collective unit. Jared is more to us on a personal level than any other guitarist weve had; we part ways wishing him the best.So today, we move forward. Were stuck in this oh-so-familiar place of needing that fourth piece of Angerkill. This is somewhere we have visited a few times already over the last eight years, but were doing things differently this time. With Jared, we got the closest to where we needed to be to date.. on a musical level and a personal level.. so we just cant settle. AK will remain a three piece, and still play live with or without help (yes, even if it means me finally conceding to doing vocals). BUT this doesnt mean that we arent looking to complete this unit as soon as possible!!! If you know someone whos a good fit, please tell them to inquire within.

Heres the big picture of what were looking for in our new lead guitarist:

A positive attitude: its a MUST that you musically challenge yourself and each of us

Versatility & accuracy in your writing & execution

Great sounding, performance-ready equipment

Anyone interested, please drop us a line and well talk some more.

As always, thanks for your support.

Jen: Badass show last night

Vengeance Upon Thee... Before the Bloodshed.. Somataform.. Lokey.. fuckin great show last night!!!

I had so much fun - everyone who WAS there made it count. great crowd.. great performances by everyone.. thanks to Mike, Lou, Miranda & Victor for the help and the sincerest thanks to Peck for putting it together and having faith in us.

"We love you, man.. AK motherfucker 2000 style!"

Now, it wouldn't be Jen if I didn't have something to bitch about. My bitchfest today is the professionalism of some of the bands on the bill. The entire backroom dropped off the show.. and one of the mainstage bands didn't call/show.. What the hell is that? I am appalled at the lack of respect for your fellow bands on the bill and YOUR BAND! I'm not talking about the bands that had family issues, emergencies, out of town with transportation issues due to malfunction, or anything else that is valid... unfortunately that stuff happens as part of life; I'm referring to the "what the fuck?!" kind of excuses given.. or no explanation, no-shows.

:::: At the urging of my bandmates, I have removed a good, juicy portion of my bitchrant. Apparently I should feel some degree of indifference. Oh well.. ::::

Lokey and Angerkill round two August 31st at Club Kristal. Great sound, low door, drink specials.. and METAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have a great Sunday! Time for barbacoa with the kids....

Dave: Ready to move to the next phase

What's up everybody...first off, i want to thank all our friends and crew that went out to the show on 7/21 at Rock City to support AK, DP, Flesh Electric, Course of Ruin, and Revenge. I feel good knowing i can count on you guys to show up and party with us. I hope you're enjoying the tunes and the show, and we're continuing to work hard on bringing new things to the stage to keep things fresh.

That leads me to the main point of this blog entry....I was telling Jen earlier, that I feel like i'm ready to move on to the next phase of the AK evolution....thing is, we're still in the early process of recording this CD, and I still have lyrics to write on two or three songs! I feel weird. I think the weird thing about this recording, is that a lot of the songs have been written for a while...years...so, to us, they're not really "new." These are really great songs though, and I can't wait for everyone to finally hear them. Finishing these songs, getting great production on them, and releasing them on a CD to become immortal was only right...there was a time when we thought about scrapping them, and just moving on with all brand new material...but they were too hard to let go of. They needed to be heard and documented as part of the AK cycle. Now that we're in the process, and hopefully done soon, it's going to be like a right of passage for me. Finally, to get these songs out of our heads and into the hands of fans....hopefully everyone will dig them and find their attachment to them, however they can relate to them...that would be great.

Inside, however, my mind is jumping ahead a bit. I'm ready to take hold of new riffs, new concepts, sounds, lyrical concepts, etc., but I've got to hold off just a bit more until this CD is done. There's a couple of strange things influencing me lately...Mideast War stuff, believe it or not...i've never really been into writing about political stuff, but for some reason, i'm really concerned about what's going on over there....i feel hypocritical in a way though, because i don't know if i'm so concerned that i'd say, "hell yeah, sign me up so i can go save the world" kind of shit....i could never leave the family to go do that...but either way, just to digest the horrors that are going down over there...the civilian deaths, the flat out lack of understanding of two different ways of life, so hell with it, let's just kill each other...it's very sad to me.

Then, i'm reading the paper this weekend, and come across an article about these two little girls from Kansas i believe...six and seven years old, locked in a basement, starving, while their stepmom and her two kids live happily upstairs. I guess the social services got a tip or something, so they were able to rescue the kids...when they questioned them, they said they only ate when their dad was home...apparently he traveled on business all the time...totally horrific and disgusting.

Man, i hope i'm not depressing you guys out there...that's not the intent here...just a quick snapshot of the discontent i feel right now for the way things are, and the sad reality that there's not a whole lot i can do personally to change every evil in the world. I guess what this is leading to is that the next round of tunes may involve some of these feelings and what not, even if it's just an outlet, not necessarily a call to action. But if some folks get that as a takeaway, even better.

I love my life, my family, my friends.

Dave: Just kickin ass and shit.. AK style!

Yeah, so AK has been busy recording, playing live, practicing...damn, this is a blast!! I mentioned to Jared the other day, that after 6 months or so of being back "on the scene", i feel like things are finally back in sync. I can recall how it felt back in January, hitting the stage for the first time in two years....while it felt like home again, there was still an awkwardness about our playing that i now dismiss as rust. Looking back, and comparing our recent performance to those first couple, i'd say we're just about firing on all cylinders at this point!

Also reflecting on the shows to date this year, I can't help but think about all the support we're getting from the crew. There's too many of ya'll to name, but you know who you are...the inner circle if you will...those that have been there, band or no band, and come out to support us....even driving up to Austin!!! That's so awesome. I don't think i can muster the words to describe how appreciative i am of everyone that has supported us so far this year....i hope you're having fun at the shows and our goal is to continue to make it worthwhile for you guys to come out and party with us.

Man....and the CD in progress...it's taking a while, and will probably be a while before it's done. We're chewing off a lot by trying for 13+ songs...the pace is slow, working around our schedules and the studio's schedule. All i can say is be patient...if you've heard tid bits of the progress to date, you know it's going to be over the top!

Overall, the AK is truckin' along at about the pace we expected for this year. We've managed to work our way back into some solid venues in San Antonio and Austin, and have good momentum on the new album. Hopefully, we're gaining some new fans, and slowly the old ones are coming out of the cracks as they here we're back in action. The line up is great...Frank is as gay as ever, but is playing top notch shit...Jen's coming up with some of the most out there bass lines she's ever done, and what can I say about the Rook, I mean, Jared....he's managed to learn the old shit, play it with intensity, and the work on the new material is going to blow you guys away.

AND....making new friends and continuing on with the old school crew...the show on 7/21 is a perfect example of that...it's always fun to play, but when you play with your buds, it's a whole other level!

Anyway...just some random thoughts and updates...hope everyone's digging the shit....see ya on 7/21 at Rock City!!

Jen: We did what we said we wouldn't

Yes, we uploaded some new music for you guys before completion.

2 a.m. and I just came back from Jared's. I went to pick up a burn of our intro - "The Darkest Peace". Dave's leaving to LA for work tomorrow and I wanted to load it into his MP3 player for him.

What we're going to do with this song is pretty much up in the air in terms of what we want to lay down next - could be yet another guitar layer from J (my personal vote at this point... but who knows.. maybe our piano person will blow us away with something). This track was written in the jamroom one night after practice. Jared busted out the main guitar layer and I started playing the chords under it. Thats ALL we went in with.. that and a 118 bpm click which we reduced to 100. While in studio this past Saturday, Jared decided to throw some chords on top - then Keith started messing around with some effects. Keith goes to take a piss and leaves the tape rolling. Jared starts noodling.. Keith comes back and starts listening to the shit backwards.. and viola! There came the "voice" parts.. it's backwards guitar played by an unfocused guitarist while Keith was pissing. Great, huh?

That leads me to Keith. I can't rave enough about what he's doing for (and TO) us. His persistence and patience is pulling some amazing things from deep within that we almost didn't know were there. Just WAIT until you hear Dave's vocals. I think the word Jared used is "scary". My word is "intense". It's almost scary to think we ever even considered anyone else. We didn't really know him before recording. We were acquaintances, but thats it. Once the guys walked into his studio though, they knew.... we've all got an amazing connection on so many levels. This is the FIRST TIME we've had someone actually co-produce us.. and we're loving it.

This session has been very therapeutic for us all. I can't even describe.. hell, just listen to the intro.

Jen

PS Studio update: We're on solos and layers right now. Bass, drums and rhythms are done.. although it is 90% decided that Dave wants to go back and add some mo' rhythm tracks. Final determination will be on how it sounds. Dave laid down a song and a half of vocals to use up some studio time because Jared had a prior commitment for the first 3 hours of studio today. Good stuff... progress will all depend on scheduling now, but we'll update.

Jen: yes, yes.. the wrong address!

It seems that I had the old address on our flyer. The Underground is no longer on West Avenue.. its 512 Roosevelt. Here are the directions we've been given:

I 10 EXIT DURANGO. GO TOWARDS DOWNTOWN. TURN RIGHT ON S. ST. MARYS. ST MARYS TURNS INTO ROOSEVELT. ADDRESS 512 ROOSEVELT. ITS ON THE LEFT.

I fixed the flyers.. they should now load correctly.

In other news, we've all been staying super busy. We haven't had time to get together and practice since the beginning of the month! Studio is keeping us busy.. tomorrow, I'll finish up some basslines, then we move to Jared's solos and layers. Sunday is more solos and layers, then vocals. We're hoping we can get our cousin, Justin from the Hydra Melody, in Sunday, but it's been hard to keep in contact with him. He's got a new baby, busy with HM and getting ready for a wedding.. so understandable. We really want him on the intro - Frank was going to start bugging him yesterday. They're on myspace.. check em out - good stuff.

http://www.myspace.com/hydramelody

Thats it for now. Have fun at Slayer tonight!!!! Dave will be there (asshole) while I'm home with the kids. Can't go because we exhausted all babysitting for studio :(

I think Frank is working it & Jared's gonna find his way there.

Jared: Angerkill.com

Hey to everybody out there. Right now we are focusing mainly on our myspace page but we do have our our domain. Angerkill.com is still alive and kicking. hopefully with the completion of the new record currently in progress we'll have time or "jen will have more time" to revamp our website. i have no idea how to build or maintain websites so i am of course no use when it comes to that. so anyway how bout yall show some support and go sign our guestbook. go to angerkill.com enter the site and click on interaction. from there select guestbook and tell us how much you love us. by the way, the new shit we're recording will fucking blow you away. can't wait to get something solid enough in our hands to offer at least a taste of the new album. okay well that's it for now and my first AK blog.

Dave: Studio update

Studio update, completion of day 2. All drums are finished, main guitars done on about half the stuff.

Man...i'm exhausted!! Quote of the day from Keith (in my opinion)..."Man....you guys didn't make this easy on yourselves, did ya?" (Regarding the speed, complexity, and insanity of these songs we're doing...i think he said this right after I finished guitars on H.S.S. and New Light's First Kiss).

Keith, bandmates, I've got to hand it to you...you guys defintely brought out my best, when i thought i was done for!!

Rock on,

AK Dave

Jen: There's so much anticipation... I'm having nightmares!

We redeemed ourselves on May 27. It wasn't a flawless show, but ranks as the best we've played this year. There's definitely something to be said for hydration - we drank a 24 pack of water in three hours. Good for performance.. bad for pissing.

We begin recording tomorrow. I'm not sure when the recording will be completed because that depends on a number of things with 1 being studio availability and 2, our finances. So far so good.. we have this weekend and next weekend booked up for core recording. No kidding about the nightmares.. for the past week, I've dreamed about my basslines. That's never happened to me before... I'm just glad we're finally here after all these years. We've got some ideas for artwork that will involve anyone who wants to be involved so I'll let you know of that early next week. There's way too much going on right now for me to spec out all the details.

We have three shows booked: June 30 at the Underground, July 7 back in Austin at Redrum and July 21 at Rock City. More details as they come available.. we're still working some shit out but they're going to be good ones. We're looking to book August in Austin and SA.. we aim to play once a month in each city. Starting back in 2001, Austin has embraced AK equally as San Antonio.. so we'll do what we can to be there for you guys too.

That's it.. we've been practicing between 5 and 6 times a week to get tight for the CD. We're all going in feeling great about it.

PS Jared's looking for a job. Anyone know anywhere hiring? It's got to be on the Northwest side to avoid punctuality challenges..... unless it's something he'll really really like.. then he'll be on time. Or do what we do.. punish him with having to buy 1 beer for every minute late. (He currently owes a keg and a twenty pack)

We'll definitely be posting some clips for you guys.

oh yeah! Thanks if you went out to the show. Special thanks to Ric from Adrian and the Sickness for driving in from Austin. Hope you guys enjoyed it.

Damn.. can't say that without thanking Scott from Curse the Form for booking it. Nice to finally play a show with you guys... and Chris from Deadpool (drunken bastard) and Pinky for helping us out with all our gear.

I noticed a couple of people taking pictures at the show. If you wouldn't mind, please do us the favor and email them to jendiazdeleon@aol.com. I'll post them on our site. I got a few, but none of us performing.

Jen

caught in the rain.. what a great moment.

I'm pretty shy when it comes to throwin' the horns... but c'mon it's Mike! We go back middle school style when I was a preppy little girl listening to New Kids on the Block and wearing Z Cavarricci and Girbaud jeans. Only Mike and my husband can call me a poser.. because they're the only ones that saw it first hand.

Jen: "We SUCKED", for sale & more

Formal apology time. Our show at the White Rabbit last Friday sucked ass.. we played everything WAY too slow and dragged bad. We still got compliments, but we think because many were hearing the stuff for the first time. Trust me, it was AK-Crowbar style.. We talked about it last night and have officially closed the door on it and decided to move on. Each one of us denounced this show as the worst yet. It was poor decisions made on our behalf to not take care of ourselves before hitting the stage. We have reinstated the "no drinking" rule before we perform.. not even one beer. None of us were buzzed at all, but our music is physically challenging for us enough.. without feeding our bodies beer. We should be hydrating ourselves as much as possible, eating right the day of, etc. We've had two shows like this so far.. we finally caught the hint. If we want to attack and tear down walls, we need to walk up there 100% prepared to do that. It won't happen again.. well, now that we know what we have to do, shame on whoever doesn't! It's supposed to be fun, but it's all for nothing if we don't perform to our potential.

Our first song, "Abrasions" has been recorded and is in the process of being mixed (thank you, J-Flex, Chris and Weldon). It's an acoustic song dedicated to our friend, Jesse.. but it still rocks like AK. We are two weeks away from immortalizing this new stuff with Keith at Monster Studio (beg. June 3rd). We're recording 13 pieces (11 new jams with 2 covers - "Davidian" from Machine Head and "Once in a Lifetime" metal style from the Talking Heads). Dave and I have some shit to sell prior to help with finances (message us if you're interested). We have a baptism, dance recital and three birthday parties to fund this summer right along side studio. One of the challenging aspects of being married in a band:

Rocktron Hush Pedal (two channel)65.00
Hartke HA 400 Bass Amp300.00 (sells 499 at Sam Ash)
Tama Swingstar Kit with Yamaha double pedal, cymbals and stands (don't know exactly what yet - we have to spec. it out)300.00
Bass box & sub for truck60.00
Italian made crib, drawer on bottom, natural blonde wood stain with thick varnish - new. Used 2 mos total 200.00 (sells for 400)
Cerwin Vega home speakers DX-9 (so cheap because of a small tear in one speaker)200.00
New in box - 10 pk 750 MB Iomega zip disks100.00

Our next show is coming up - May 27th at the White Rabbit with Curse the Form, Anomik & Before the Bloodshed. I've got a flyer on the main page of our myspace. Any help passing this thing out and promoting is very much appreciated!!

Until I have more rantings & non-hearings for you all,

Jen

PS by the way, Rantings will be our first video. We also sat around and pretty much scripted it last night. In due time (when our pocket book heals..) - It's gonna cost $600-700 dollars to do.

Jen: White Rabbit 10th Anniversary show & studio progress

We have a show this Friday at the Rabbit. It's another one of those insane attempts at putting a million bands on the bill. Check out the lineup below. It looks like it's gonna be a packed house. The backroom lineup is really good.

Main Stage
6:30 PM Mark Searcy Delta Blues
7:15 PM Daniel Walker & the Lake Eerie Oarsmen
8:00 PM Strikes Back
8:45 PM Adelin
9:30 PM Structure
10:15 PM Desdemona
11:00 PM Meek
11:45 PM Lokey
12:30 AM When Words Attack
1:15 AM The Blend?

Jam Stage
7:30 PM Jobber
8:15 PM Threat
9:00 PM Enormity
9:45 PM Brotherhood
10:30 PM Thirteen Muses
11:15 PM Angerkill
12:00 AM Deadpool
12:45 AM Before the Bloodshed

In other news, I'm fuckin' way tired. We finished up our studio pre-production stuff on Monday and got it to Keith last night. It turned in to a last minute rush to get it done. I did a quick, really quick mix and dumped them night before last, finally finishing up at 5am. This was a great thing and even though it was such a major pain in the ass, I would recommend doing it to any band. It really shows you where your areas of improvement are. We have a few things to hone in on before we get in there and thats where we're at now. We need to just play the hell out of these songs (to a click - I'm currently working on the tempo maps) and Jared has to get his solos concrete.

We'll be recording two covers but we're not sure if they'll be on the CD or not. We haven't decided what we want to do with them just yet. The covers are "Davidian" from Machine Head and "Once in a Lifetime" from the Talking Heads. We started working on our rendition of "Once in a Lifetime" this past Saturday and it's really promising. It sounds GREAT as a metal song.

Kids are awake.. i'll have to finish this up later! Hope to see you all Friday.

Thursday, May 4, 2006

We are not playing Bonds tomorrow!!

It says so in the Edge Magazine, but it's not so! We were asked to play but declined (we were already booked twice in SA this month.. one more time than we usually allow).

So... sorry for any misunderstandings. Next show is May 12th at the White Rabbit for the 10th anniversary party.. 11:00 backroom.

Jen

Jen: Studio tonight, Rock City & other stuff

We had a show at Rock City last weekend. Despite all the problems, it was a blast! My bass went out during the second song. It was a problem with my instrument cable. Jared lends me one of his and it doesn't work either! This made me second guess my theory and start ripping shit outta my rack to just go direct. Anyways, I never recovered.

We get set up in the garage, i hook it up, and find the problem was originally as thought. Jared unknowingly lent me a broken cable! What're the chances of THAT. Cool thing is.. in practice, he thought his pedal was going out.. but it was just the cable. We cut our set short, but it ended up working out because the show was running 45 minutes behind because the sound guy didn't show up on time. Even with my bass going in and out, we won Rockstar Ending Competition - ANGERKILL vs DEADPOOL round 1! Doctura even got up in that shit... ya just can't beat "Eye of the Tiger"..(yes,we did). We ended up getting really drunk that night. By the end of the night, Jared and I were chugging Limon 7 (sal con limon packets we got from La Michoacana across the street). Lame! It was a lot of fun for me because I finally got to go to a show with the guys instead of showing up late, leaving early. Our baby is now 8 months old, totally weaned and sleeping through the night. Anyways, Rockstar Ending Competition round 2: AK vs DP commences on May 12th! I have a feeling we're gonna have some stiff competition that night. I saw the flash of determination in Guitarlos' eyes.... anyways, thank you, as always, to everyone that went to the show.

There's not much to report besides getting ready for studio still - it's almost time! We're moving along.. trying to get Jared to write all of his parts. Man.. lemme tell ya. He is a very indecisive writer just like me.. and his parts are taking him a long time (like mine do) but I work at them more than he does so he has a lot more to go. Dave and I nagged him all last week to be here writing solos and it took him like 3 hours for one solo.. but that shit sounds GREAT! Absolutely reaching full potential. We were sitting in the jamroom last night until 2:30 or so just listening to the solos on "Signs of a Storm". It went like this: "rewind it, Jen. I RULE! rewind it, Jen. I RULE! rewind it, Jen".. well, you get the idea. I always told him he could write badass solos!!

We got a call Monday night from a local producer about going into Melody Ranch for some free studio time as a learning session for some recording students. Hell yeah, we took it! I had 48 hours to finish up basslines for this song, but they're done. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous though - we played it for the first time together yesterday - and it wasn't even full band. We didn't have a sitter so I went in and did my parts with Frank and Jared and Dave watched the kids, then Dave went in there, Frank played my bass and I watched the kids.. but we still have yet to play it all together. We're doing an acoustic song, named "Abrasions", that Jared wrote for our friend Jesse after the accident. I've always loved it.. even when I first heard it. The irony of it all... we had a birthday party for Jesse after he passed here at our pad.. and Jared played the song. I recorded it on video to send to Jesse's brother in Iraq (not that I ever transferred it to file.. computer problems) and a friend of ours, Krystal, says on the tape "you guys better not take it!" Well, it's an AK song now! We had no idea back in 2001 that Jared would be in the band, much less that we'd all be recording that song.

Jared and I had a great night last night. After practice, he went with Frank to have some drinks, then Frank dropped him back off here where Dave, our friend big Lou and I were sitting in the garage (where I was writing my basslines). Kids were way asleep by then so we had the monitor out there just bullshitting. Jared came back and I stayed talking to him until about 2:30 about all sorts of stuff.. all of it therapeutic. We got to talking about just how amazing it is that we're all together.. and what a perfect fit he is for the band and how close we've all become. I told him he is "perfect for the band.. (the pessimist in me) unless he stops caring". He looked straight at me and said he never would. I believe him. In the past, we've become good friends with the 4th member of the band.. but not like this. This is always what we strived to attain - total equality, complete faith - and it's here! 6:30 and we'll be recording our first stuff as ANGERKILL.

Back to listening to those basslines. I don't want to look like a fool tonight.

Jen: We ordered more shirts - show tonight!

.. from what I've heard, you can take bottles in!

9 Man of Sorrows

10 Innervoid

11 Angerkill

12 Deadpool

1 Doctura

Rock City Bar - Ages 18+ - $6 cover

Hope to see you guys out there! We have a "rockstar ending" competition.. AK vs DP. From what we hear, they're not ready, but they're not going down without a fight! We'll be playing a full 45 mnute set tonight so come out and hear the new stuff that'll be on the album!
I placed an order for 36 more shirts of the same design. They'll be in next week.

We've been (still) practicing a lot and trying to get the pre-production recording done and to Keith. It's really helping us to solidify parts. I am about 80% finished with my bass parts. My fingers are killing me - the tips of my index and middle fingers on my left hand are pretty bruised up. Practice last night actually hurt. Jared is now doing his solos and layers and they're coming along great.. just taking more time than expected at this point. After he finishes up, we'll throw down some vocals, get the piano laid down and it's done. I told Keith we'd have it to him first week in May (any later than that and it really serves no purpose because we go in the first two weeks in June - and he needs time with it) so I suppose that we'll just get it to him at whatever stage its at. We DO plan on posting some of this preproduction stuff online, but only segments for copyright reasons.

We're planning on recording a couple of covers, not for inclusion in the album, but to be released later. One for sure is "Davidian" by Machine Head. Frank and Dave are contemplating "Once in a Lifetime" by the Talking Heads. Anyone have any suggestions, we'll take em!

Jen: Studio progress, Metal show tonight!

Forgive me people, for its been 8 days since our last blog.

We've been working like crazy. Practice last week was 4 days straight (Tuesday - Friday) with a big ass old-school BBQ with the crew here Saturday, Easter Sunday with Dave, Frank, kids and my family on my mom's property on the Guadalupe, and Monday off, then back to work yesterday. Beginning Tuesday of last week, we started that pre-production work we have been talking about. We routed all the drums and guitars through the mixer, then went to track one of our Boss BR-8. It took a few tries and experimenting with mic placement & EQing to get it solid. I then put a track of bass down - ran through my Line 6 Bass Pod. Dave started laying down an additional rhythm track for added definition last night. I have to go back and do all my bass effects and layers, then Jared's up next. We hope to finish up all vocals and extras and have the final package to Keith by May 1st so he has a month to let it fester.

Is that metal or what?!?! I slapped my bass and it slapped me back.

The stuff is not perfect - we were just trying to capture the groove for tempo maps and to give Keith a platform to jump off ahead of time for some creative recording/mixing ideas. Dave is set to keep recording rhythm tracks tonight. The cool thing with all this is, for me at least, I can feel myself becoming more in-tune with the songs the more I play them and can feel them tightening up. I'm also happy to have something solid to write my basslines too. Because I'm unable to practice as much as the guys, it's been a little tough to keep up from a creative aspect, but having this HELPS A LOT.

The plan is to head out to Kristal's tonight to check out Course of Ruin, Brotherhood, Lokey and Before the Bloodshed. It's a task to get out these days though - Frank has his daughter all week and we expend all our babysitting for practices. We'll see what happens - we're at the mercy of my sister. Anyone who feels the need for a good metal show should go to Kristal's to check out some talent! Dave and I haven't been there yet but look forward to hearing this grand sound that promotes - it's the old Sneaker's on Perrin-Beital. It should be good - we're heard nothing but great things about Kristal's.

Happy 420!!!!

Jen: "I just need aaair!!"

... pleads a sweaty, dehydrated Jared in the middle of our 100 degree sauna of a practice last Friday.

It's been a while since our last blog. There's no good reason for that.. Dave is too lazy to write one (he's not really into the internet unless it's to download music), Frank doesn't have access to a computer on a regular basis anymore, and well, Jed chooses to be silent and save his wit for hair blogs.

We had those two shows - our first show back in Austin and then set here at the Bleed the Sky show.'ve got to start by sending our most sincere thanks to everyone at those shows.

We had a blast in Austin! Man, it was awesome to play alongside such a great line-up. Jared experienced for the first time how Austin embraces AK. We get more interest in Austin than we have here at home! I can't explain why - for whatever reason it's just always been like that. We must have gotten 10-12 new Myspace add requests the next couple of days because of our 30 minute set that night. Thanks to Pure Metal Sickness for filming our set and the interview afterwards and for being so supportive of METAL!!

SA was great too. That show made us realize one thing - how many very true friends we have. All the old school crew were out there! I can't name you all, but you know who you are. Thanks for taking time out of your hectic weeknights to come and support. Again, it was nice to be a part of such a good bill and it was wonderful to see you all.

I posted pictures on our website from both of these shows.. and really everything involving Jared to this point. You can check them out HERE.

We have a show coming up in a couple of weeks at Rock City Bar. Please help us promote it. The code to copy and paste is below:

METAL for the art of music

..and last, but definitely not least, we are making progress towards the goal! We have nine songs completed and ready for recording. The guys finished up the last song on Friday. Dave and Jared started writing it 2 years ago and we adopted it, worked on it diligently for about a month and a half and finally got it down. What was frustrating about this one is that the song was all written except the ending - we could never get it right!!!! We were making it too difficult - too many changes. It FINALLY came in the form of perfect collaboration: Dave asked Jared to write a variation off one of the other riffs, Jared belted it out and Frank added some massive drums on top (I follow his double bass), then Dave completed the soundscape with a layer. It took everyone focused to get this one done, but I LOVE how it came out! Hopefully we will debut it April 28th. It all depends on whether Dave gets the lyrics penned by then.

Another cool thing that happened at practice tonight was that Dave and Frank figured out how to run the two kicks, overhead and guitar cabs through our mixer to the recording device (Boss BR-8) as 1 track so we can add bass, lyrics and layers on the stuff we're writing. It actually sounds pretty full and should help our writing progress along better. Jared can actually hear the guitars to write his solos and layers now and I can solidify my bass lines on some of these new ones before our recording sessions, which are set for the first two weekends in June with Keith at Monster Music Studios.

Not too exciting, huh?! Well for us it is, dammit! We're seriously determined to make the best piece of art we're capable of.

Bleed the Sky (Nuclear Blast) will be returning to the White Rabbit along with Silent Civilian on April 3rd. It's a Monday.. but here's why you should go.

Presale tickets are only $5 - yeah, I said it! $5! If that wasn't enough, it's all ages and Brotherhood and Plague are also on the bill along with some other bands to be added to the

Jen: defunct Angerkill.com/pictures needed

Our websites been down for a while.. well, it's up, but half the shit on it doesn't work. Kinda like Frank. haha.. kidding...

Seriously, I've been working on putting up pictures and graphics, stuff that's needed. I'm not putting a whole lot of time into the actual looks of the site because I plan to have a whole new website launch with the album. I'm not by any means a web author extraordinaire.. I just learned by neccessity for the band, so if anyone would like to work with me on this, I'd appreciate the help!

If anyone has pictures of the band since Jared's been a part of things, please send them over. I'm working now on posting those up. Also, if you have pictures for Eric & Jesse's page (any pictures of them), I can add those too at this time - it's about time we get some fresh images in there. My email address is jendiazdeleon@aol.com

We picked up some more shows. As far as booking is concerned, this is it until July. We will be focusing on studio prep.

Frank's bud from Houston, Lupita was nice enough to post a short video clip. If you're interested, check it out on her page HERE.

A very special thanks to them for documenting and sharing pieces of the night for us.

.. next show? Stay tuned for an indepth blog about what's on the plate now.

Jen: March 4 - a tribute to 2 awesomely kickass bitches

If fate would not have worked it's magic, this band would not be what it is today.

I'm convinced that there are people in the world who "get it" and who don't. Straight up, most of the time, I don't get it. I have my moments of clarity. Ironically, Dave and I tend to surround ourselves with friends who "get it." By "it", I'm referring to the purpose in life and a constant focus of how to live daily. Those people who understand purpose are here to teach those of us who don't.

March 4th is dedicated to two people who definitely got it.. and to all their friends & family, still on this earth, that truly live life.

I can tell a vivid account of March 4, 2002 but the details aren't what matter. It's everything that has happened afterwards and the lives that have been changed because of it.

The sceneario was this: Three very good friends were coming home from Clicks (Jesse Ortiz, Roger Trevinio and Eric Gutierrez). They had an accident. For Dave and I, the early morning was spent going to the accident to identify Jesse, making phone calls to their family members, standing vigil at the hospital to be there when Eric took his last breath. We came home, stared into Jesse's bedroom and wondered how God would let something like this happen. It was a nightmare that I don't wish on anyone.

Many hearts were broken, but many relationships on individual levels also came from this loss. I can tell countless stories, but there is one, and one only, that is directly significant to the band as it stands now.

I remember looking into Jesse's bedroom (it was adjacent to ours in our home) sometime during the days after the accident and seeing Jared and another friend, Krystal holding eachother and looking around. I'll never forget looking at them, and being speechless. We exchanged some painful emotion just with that one glance, and I turned and walked into my bedroom. At this time, I didn't know Jared. I had only seen him around here and there. I have a horrible memory and often don't connect right away, but that was our moment of connection.

I recall talking to Jesse and Eric at the table one afternoon in 2001 about why they weren't more proactive in their search for a guitarist. They told me they were going to let fate handle it. It made sense.. the music they made was ambient, fluid and soothing, all with fire. My response, and this was my "metal" mindset back then, thinking that I had the hang of all of this, was that you have to be aggressive and make things happen. Relying on fate was for "chumps". They took my advice and soon there after, they put an ad in the Edge. I made calendars for them to schedule their practices, to schedule auditions and they used them.

One guitarist came to our house that liked and instantly connected with. Dave and I were sitting in our living room when they played this guy a tape. While he improvised along, I thought, "wow, this is gonna be good." The accident happened before they ever got to jam with him again. I ran into him at the Mix weeks later (and it was pure coincidence I think I've been to the Mix only TWICE EVER). He was playing pool. I went up to him and told him of the accident and that they were gone. I didn't want them to seem like flakes who never called him back.

Over time, we saw Jared more and more when he'd play with 9th Burden, but still really didn't know him. All of Jesse and Eric's friends put together a somewhat of a support network so we tried to see 9th Burden when we could because of Jared and Alex. Dave and Jared connected on an individual level during 2002 when AK was dormant and he was looking to start another band. Certain things in our lives conceded and Frank and Dave joined forces again. So to make a long story short, chances are that Angerkill would not be without losing Jesse, who brought us Jared. Dave, Frank and I feel that Angerkill is the strongest it's ever been.. and we have musically surpassed anything we've ever done, on an individual and collective level. There's no way for anyone else to feel it right now but us.

I think we were both right and, combined, had the answer. You can't always MAKE things happen. Fate has to lend it's precarious hand to make something worthwhile.

We signed up for the show on March 4th to celebrate LIFE. We want to not only honor two amazing friends, but the legacy they left behind. These guys were very supportive of us on a creative level, and still give us the inspiration we need to keep reaching new heights. This is the first Saturday since the accident this is the strongest each of us has been creatively. The show is actually a competition for a shot to perform in front of a label. Just to make this known we welcome the feedback from whoever is sitting on a panel to give it to us, but aren't playing for anyone on March 4th but the stars above and the friends and family who have gaping holes in their hearts, and to strangers who wish to come together in the name of two beautiful lives who touched so many.

"We will forever miss you, Jess and Eric"

Jen: Shirts are in

The shirts are back from the printer. They came out really really badass. If you're in a band and need shirts printed, drop me a message and I'll refer you to the people who did ours. (Thanks, Gordon!).

I tried to contact everyone individually - think I got to most people. The toddler and kids shirts are not back yet. We should have them early next week.

Jen: Jamroom pictures

Here are some photos of our rehearsal space. It's still a work in progress. Those of you that have been will notice a huge difference! We finally finished unpacking from our move in 2000. I'm going to keep updating with blogs as I get closer to the finish line with this project.

This is what you see when you walk in the garage door. That metal entertainment unit rack holds our stereo and band supplies (paper stock, media, etc.) I won't be in here alone at night. All these pictures were taken at the same time at about 2 a.m. and the air was clear in the room.

This is a close-up of the mural on that wall. It says, "life is not lived by hours or days, but rather by the moments that we have shared and experienced with one another." Nate (of THREAT) sent us a message with that quote in it, and although he said he heard it somewhere else, it stuck with us so much we put it up for inspiration/motivation.

While standing in front of that wall, if you turn to the right, you'll see our wall of recording equipment and the amps/cabs. See how hi-tech we are? We have a Boss digital 8, but do we use it?! Nope.. we use one mic hanging from the garage door opener (which doesn't work...) plugged into a tape recorder. OK, notice those two bright spots by Dave and Jared's cabs?! Maybe I'm just a big puss... but I swear it feels like someone's in there with you when you're alone!

This is the opposite wall - the one in need of the most work still. I plan on painting it white to open up the room a bit and add some sound panels. Right now, it just houses 2 important things for us - the fridge and our dry-erase board that we use faithfully when writing. Those trunks hold every AK flyer ever made, every promo shot, every receipt for anything purchased for the band, etc. back to '98. -Jen

Jen: Baaack to work, scatterbrained bastards!

We got back to practicing Friday. Big Lu was here, then Frank's friend, Lisa, showed up to check stuff out. We warmed up to some of the regular jams for about an hour or so to condition (condition?! ha.. you should see how much beer we consumed! Damn!), then moved on to writing. There were soo many to choose from - there's a song that the guys wrote in Feb of 2004 that got left behind so we picked up on that one. Jared and I put together some wicked melodies for this song. It's unlike anything we've done because, typically, we go for the break and dynamics toward the middle/end of the song, but this one starts with a melody, the verse is then again seudo-orchestral, hits it after the first chorus, nutty verse again, again after the second chorus, and we havent even HIT the break yet. That's where we're at... and what's different this time is that the break needs to be insanely heavy with Jared harmonizing with Dave - which theyre doing already in this song. I'm liking it a lot.

SATURDAY was a trying one on the patience! Shit.. for me at least. I think for Dave too, but he's not as bad as me. My sister got here late, but it worked out because we started late. I was able to run in and throw on my bass to finish out "New Sun Rising" (which was the first song) with them. Again, we warmed up with the set and shifted gears to writing. Big Lu and Jared's buddy Jason from Flesh Electric were here to check stuff out from the start. One we started writing, it was tough to keep Jared and Frank's attention. Chris from Deadpool showed up and then forget it! FUCK... This is how things went for the next hour....

JARED: "be right back - I gotta pee."

FRANK: "you go pee with your fuckin' cell phone, Jared?!"

---pause for 5 minute long piss---

DAVE: "ok, after this part, we're going to the verse"

JARED: "whats the verse?"

-----not ONE TIME, but THREE TIMES!---------

..and here was the most frustrating part for me. For TWO HOURS.... one of us would be trying to talk and Frank is having separate conversations with Chris, then we'd agree on a part, be ready to go, and he'd say "ok, what are we doing now?" and we'd have to repeat it all over. Then again on another part, Dave, Frank and I would agree on something, Jared was noodling on his guitar, then we'd be ready to go, drumclicks, and he'd say, "ok, what are we doing now?!". The worst part of this being not that we had to waste time by repeating everything twice, but that by not listening, they weren't giving their input that we need from all right now. Try dealing with that for over an hour... most people could without bother, but.. I suppose i'm not most people!!! Eh, they gotta deal with me as much as I deal with them, I guess.

Don't get me wrong, I never got angry because I was in a good mood, but it was a def. frustrating. I have always been known to be anal when it comes to practice, studio, shit like that. The perfect practice to me would be with nobody there, unless they vowed silence (sorry, Chris!!!!!), turn off your cell phones or at LEAST don't answer it so we don't need to sit and wait for conversation to cease before we can proceed, beer (which we do without fail), swift breaks, and, most importantly, FOCUS. Despite all that happened during practice, we accomplished so much and got to the end of the song. Imagine what we could have done had we been on task!

I gotta give it up to Frank this time, though. He was really sweet. I worked super hard to create our practice space (which I must say really really kicks ass and was worth every minute of work) and left a dumb little comment on here that they must bring beer and chinese candy for that. Frank actually bought me a special 6 of Dos X and a bag of Chinese candy!! Jared even pitched in for beer (normal for most, rare for him! Like finding a pond in the dessert...) So I give it up to Frank for being thoughtful... and "thanks for letting your pockets finally breathe a little, Jared!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

...now if only they hadn't drank all the beer he bought me... assholes.

I'm makin' jamroom rules and it's NOT gonna be pretty!!

Frank: Thank You AK Friends & My Two Cents

Wow....

This is coming kinda late...only because i've been recouping and Dave, Jen, and Big Fukin' Lou have been cleaning up our jam space. More on that later....But first:

Our most heartfelt thanks to Threat, Brotherhood, Course Of Ruin, and Lokey.

And ultimatley...the fans! Ya'll are the fucking best in the world. No doubt about it...hands down....Thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts.

Moving on:

We were so thankful to have such a great lineup at our Comeback show. And all of the bands kicked so much ass.

If you were ask Nate from Threat...he'd probably argue with ya. They had a pretty crappy mix. I don't know what the hell it was. They kept getting feedback from hell. But if you block that shit out....they fucking put on a great show. Nate knows how to get down on that bass. Keep it up!

Brotherhood: Man...those guys are a new breed of Metal all together. I remember when Dave use to be jammin' with Protein Shake, and Course of Faith. Compared to now...shit.....Dave knew what to go after. He went with his heartfelt desire...and it's working. They put on a great show. I was simply blown away. It's really sad that they aren't signed yet. They deserve to be the next Metal act out of San Antonio. No joke.

Course Of Ruin: Fuckin' Walter never ceases to amaze me either. They have so much stage presence. Too bad Shaun was actin' a gimp though! Just kidding bro! It was actually kinda cool to see Shaun all 'gimped' out and still headbangin' and shit. But anyway...C.O.R.'s set was powerful and still amazing. They are so tight...so full of pick ups, stops, and great accents. I love these guys and i can't wait to jam with them again in March.

Lokey: Before they went on, Jon came up to me and said, " Dude, it's a whole new set. All the jams are new...please tell me what you think!" Well fuckin' A' brother...i was blown away again for the 4th time that night. And ya'll were the last one to do it to me! The new songs are indeed heavier and more aggresive. Err! That's the way it should be MoFo!

Then we had our interview with The Scene. Jen and Gonzo are the fuckin' best. Jen is the shit...Gonzo is the shit, and i'm happy to say that Angerkill totally endorses their show, what they do for the music scene, and because they believe in us. Jen told me something after the interview that totally blew my mind. I simply told her that i was extremely happy for giving us the chance to be on the program. Her response was "No, Thank You!". I was kinda thrown off by that. Then she went to say that they wanted us on the program. And that the music scene has been waiting for our return. I was like, "huh? NO fuckin' way....". That totally made my night. Anyway...without going into too much detail...Jen, Gonzo, and The Scene are making us feel totally welcomed back.

And it just feels right. Like everything is where it's supposed to be.

So....we took a week off from practice. We had been goin' at it hard since October...Nothing big...nobody needed 'mind rest' or anything like that. Trust...we coulda kept going the monday after the show. But like i stated above...Dave, Jen, and B.F.L., (Big Fuckin' Lou...goddamn....why didn't i just type that shit out....i ended up typing it out anyway. Now i've spent more time just trying to explain what B.F.L. was...or is.....whatever....bleh!) are making our practice space cleaner and adding more ambiance. I can't wait to get in there!

That's it for now!!!!!!!!!!! See you motherfuckers later!!!!!!!!!!

Love,
Frank Diaz de Leon
